→ Home Zone beta 6 (Mac OS X 10.4 only)
Yesterdays beta 5 was admittedly a bit brittle, so everyone who experienced problems, please download the new release. Things that should work better now include:
- Greyed out menu items
- Empty dropdown box
- Sudden quitting, problems when restarting – you may have to restart your Mac once, though.
No new features, sorry.

Hm, even this beta unexpectedly quits for me.
I started it through a terminal, and it did quit with a bus error… dunno if I can do anything more…
This is on a MacBook Pro with a Core 2 Duo.

Hey – with this update I began experiencing unexpected quits and also it doesn’t seem to save on quit (manual or unexpected) as the next time I start Home Zone it doesn’t have the configurations I setup.
Hotly anticipating further development of this great app.

Does it help when you remove ~/Library/Application Support/Home Zone/ and reboot your Mac? Or, in Terminal, type
env NSZombieEnabled=YES ../Home\ Zone.app/Contents/MacOS/Home\ Zone
and see if that tells you more. How are your scan intervals set up? Do you have both airport and bluetooth triggers set up?
In the meantime, you can also continue to use beta 4 or beta 5. :-/

I can’t seem to drag an application into the open file or URL spot, or is this intended? And a ’stop screensaver’ action would be really nice too, as well as applescript (haven’t tested if open file/url works with that yet).

Hi,
Great and useful app. Thanks.
I am having one problem though. When I upgraded from beta4, the apps I had configured with ‘Open file / URL’ stopped working. Applescripts still work, but no apps.
Also, as Chando says, its kind of difficult to drag an app / applescript / url in the space. A few tries usually get me there, but I have not been successful with URLs at all.
Continue the good work.

hey,

For improved .app handling in the open file/url action, larger drag target zones and fewer problems with networks that have special characters, please re-download Home Zone.

One issue I’ve found… HomeZone doesn’t detect when I’ve turned AirPort off and leaves me in my last zone.

wow this is a great idea! however, what if aurora is running while you are out of the house? will your password be disabled still? actually i just send you a comment regarding that somewhere else. will password enabled waking ever be implemented in aurora ala “alarm clock 2″? that combined with this app would be awesome.

If you have a bluetooth phone you can just make a zone named ‘Mobile Around’ and attach your mobile phone to it and so if you leave the zone, the screensaver password activates etc.

How is the bluetooth polling done? I tried setting the interval to 5 seconds but it still takes at least 30 seconds for it to detect that it’s out of range/turned off.
February 17th, 2007 at 10:33 am
Bluetooth polling isn’t very fast at the moment, so it may take 20-30 seconds (check the spinner next to the dropdown box). There is room for improvement, though, and I’ll be working on that.

Left some suggestions there: http://osx.iusethis.com/app/homezone
Tools schmiert auch bei mir regelmässig ab. Es scheint der Bluetooth-Scan schuld zu sein

Oops, versehentlich Submit erwischt.
Thread 4 Crashed:
0 com.apple.Foundation 0x9297c120 _NSRaiseError + 264
1 com.apple.Foundation 0x9297be5c +[NSException raise:format:] + 40
2 com.apple.Foundation 0x92942468 -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:] + 124
3 de.metaquark.homezone 0x000054f4 -[JWAirportNetworkScanner(Private) _getNetworks] + 616
4 de.metaquark.homezone 0x00005100 -[JWAirportNetworkScanner(Private) _runUpdateThread:] + 72
5 com.apple.Foundation 0x92961194 forkThreadForFunction + 108
6 libSystem.B.dylib 0x9002b508 _pthread_body + 96

Jo, das wärs dann. Für weitere Fragen siehe meine Email.
Toi toi toi und weiter so!

A couple of suggestions for more actions:
– switch to login screen
– adjust running services (APF, FTP, etc) and/or firewall rules
… and more triggers:
– sleep and wake
– devices on wired network (MAC addresses?)
– time ranges
Do you have a donations setup? I would be happy to contribute small amounts periodically…

There is a similar (simpler) utility that has related capabilities…
http://semaja2.net/wifiscriptorinfo
The difference is that you run arbitrary AppleScript, which you can edit from in the program.
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:36 am
Thanks, I wasn’t aware of WiFiScriptor until now. However, I’m unable to download it. Could you mail the application to me (jonas at this domain) or provide a download link? Unfortunately though, not all useful actions can be performed using AppleScript.
I’ve noted your suggestions and will try to add them to a later release. At the moment, I’m working on creating a plugin-architecture for actions, so adding more actions will be easier in the future, users can create their own actions and maybe there will also be an online repository for actions. Also, I drafted a much improved interface and Louis has provided some awesome icons, but this may take some time to complete.

Automatically starting the screensaver would be a great addition. So when I leave my machine with my cell phone on me the screensaver kicks in.
Great app, by the way.
February 24th, 2007 at 3:56 am
You can download it from MacUpdate: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24145
To be honest, I haven’t downloaded it ‘cos I haven’t yet needed the functionality…
Plus, a complete and utter lack of spare time to learn AppleScript, and Home Zone does 90% of what I want…
February 24th, 2007 at 10:21 am
It already does this, just select the “Start Screen Saver” action.
February 24th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
I set it up with a new home zone, and though I’ve been sitting on my couch for the last half hour, it seems to think that I’m leaving and reentering my home zone. (I have Growl set up to speak to me, and every 5 seconds, it says “enable/disable screensaver password”.
February 24th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
Sweet. Don’t know how I missed that.
