AppFresh Preview 6

AppFresh Development Preview 6 (Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 only)

We are very happy to finally announce the new Development Preview 6 release of AppFresh. It comes with a new three-pane user interface that we think is much cleaner and more flexible than the old two-pane layout. The three-pane layout gives the room for new and customizable categories in the left pane. You can now even create your own categories and add applications using drag&drop.

Besides a nearly complete rewrite of the AppFresh core components we added some new features that were requested throughout the last months. We are glad to now support Microsoft AutoUpdate in addition to Apple Softwareupdate, Sparkle and osx.iusethis.com. AppFresh now checks the Microsoft AutoUpdate sources directly without depending on iusethis. Update checking Microsoft applications should therefore become more accurate and stable. If you experience any problems or if you are a Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac user, please contact us in case of problems. Support for native Adobe update checking is being tested, but will likely not be available before the 1.0 release.

Complete list of changes:

  • General rewrite of AppFresh core components
  • Major speed improvements on scanning applications
  • New three-pane user interface without progress sheets
  • Added new default categories. Use drag&drop to create a new customizable category
  • Added support for Microsoft AutoUpdate
  • Added a default group for Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac (not MSO 2008!)
  • Added support for checking AddressBook plugins
  • Added iusethis fallback checking for broken Sparkle appcasts
  • Added new update states for network errors and iusethis fallback checks
  • The iusethis description of applications can be shown in the inspector
  • Fixed a crash reporter bug
  • Fixed a bug when AppFresh would not finish update checking
  • Fixed some Leopard compatibility issues
  • Removed iusethis autosearch
  • Improved adding and removing applications from iusethis profile

Note: The underlying data model of AppFresh has changed significantly from previous versions. If you updated from an older version and experience any problems, please try cleaning the ~/Library/Application Support/AppFresh folder and restart AppFresh.

This version isn’t working for me (I’m on 10.4.11). It either bounces and then stops without running, or runs for a few seconds and then crashes.

  2. thomas Says:

Please send us your console log. In case you updated, please remove all content from ~/Library/Application Support/AppFresh.

  3. Gary Gale Says:

Alas I’m also having a persistent crash. I’ve completely uninstalled — via AppZapper — as well as just removing the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/AppFresh. A copy of AppFresh.crash.log is available if needed.

  4. jonas Says:

Hi. Please mail that to contact@metaquark.de – thanks!

  5. Gary Gale Says:

Crash log just mailed as requested.

  6. Michel Says:

where is the option to group applications in a folder ?

  7. Greg Peterson Says:

Guys, I’m trying to email you my crash log file, but it keeps bringing up an error about connection problems whenever I send the email :( Is this a problem on my end, Yahoos end, or yours?

  8. Greg Peterson Says:

Sorry for all the comments, but I just found 0.6.1 and tested it, and it works fine. Thanks for the fix!

  9. akidd Says:

I want my Appfresh back… all of a sudden the latest version 6.05 is crashing. I don’t think I’ve added anything new to my system. It happens when searching for updates somewhere. Is there any way to find the offending app? I’d rather delete it and have AF back! I’ve sent in all crash logs via the send feature when AF starts after crash.

  10. thomas Says:

The crash seems to be related to Microsoft AutoUpdate 2, that is shipped wit MS Office 2008. Please try ‘defaults write de.metaquark.appfresh IUEnableMicrosoftAutoUpdate FALSE’ in your console and start AppFresh. We are working on a fix.

  11. Kirk Staley Says:

    thomas, that comment helped.

  12. Rex Says:

I tried the suggestion above. “defaults write de.metaquark.appfresh IUEnableMicrosoftAutoUpdate FALSE This does not fix the crash.

  13. fmayakos Says:

The Terminal command worked for me, just fine!
(quick response there metaquark guys! you rock!)

  14. jonas Says:

Please update to AppFresh 0.6.2 or download it from http://metaquark.de/download/appfresh – if you ran ‘defaults write de.metaquark.appfresh IUEnableMicrosoftAutoUpdate FALSE’ please now run ‘defaults delete de.metaquark.appfresh IUEnableMicrosoftAutoUpdate’ once to restore default behaviour – it doesn’t crash anymore.

  15. Greg Peterson Says:

All of these quick-fix updates are fantastic guys, thanks for keeping on top of things.

  16. The Doctor What Says:

It keeps showing FlickUploader being at 3.0.3, but I have installed the update that AppFresh downloaded (3.0.5).

    AppFresh: 0.6.2/609
    MacOsX 10.5.2

  17. will Says:

Hi, this isn’t the biggest of problems, but appfresh wont connect to iusethis.com. I get that my iusethis credentials are invalid, but I promise you they are… I’ve gone back and forth from the site to appfresh entering the same information. works on iusethis, but no in appfresh… no biggie, just spreading awareness!!! :-) !

  18. michiek Says:

this is really a great app.

is there any place where i can post apps not being updated by i use this ?

    tia

  19. thomas Says:

Please contact us at contact@metaquark.de in case you have problems logging into iusethis. We prepared a build for testing and would like to get some feedback.

  20. Michael Says:

Hi, AppFresh 6.1.3 keeps crashing repeatedly on start.
Using os x 10.4.11. i have cleaned the ~/Library/Application Support/AppFresh fold but to no avail… any suggestions?

  21. thomas Says:

Michael, please send your Crashreport to contact@metaquark.de.

  22. John Johnson jr. Says:

Since the switch to the all-new AppFresh it isn’t working for me anymore (Leopard 10.5.2).

AppFresh only detects a small number of up to date programs and a huge number of unknown ones.

Most of these have not been unknown to it before the switch and some were not up to date at all as I found out when I started them.

Even worse – when I reset the version informations AppFresh starts to count my applications and in the end unknown and up to date programs together are less than the total number (and no programs to update). If I repeat this a few times every time the number of up to date programs is different and some of the programs are too. It looks totally random.

Am I the only one with these problems?

  23. Gary Gale Says:

In previous versions of AppFresh you could edit the name of an application’s iusethis.com entry but this seems to have been removed in the latest version.

This means that unless an applications file name matches exactly the iusethis entry it can never be listed via AppFresh. For example, I use the DoSomeWhen preference pane which is /Library/PreferencePans/DSW.prefpane … iusethis lists this “Do Something When” … a search for “DSW” reveals no apps by this name.

You could argue that this is a flaw in iusethis but I did find the “edit iusethis entry name” function useful in the past.

(AppFresh 0.6.3/613 on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.4.11)
